The Classic Photochromic Lens

Umbramatic is the name given to the range of glass photochromic lenses from ZEISS. This wide spectrum of products caters for a wide variety of prescriptions and tastes.

The single vision lens Umbramatic Brown with the refractive index 1.525 has been in our product range since 1970 and is now the classic among photochromic lenses.

For your choice
The use of anti-reflective coatings such as ET, Gold ET and Super ET enhances wearing comfort by reducing reflections on the lens. AR coatings are particularly important for tinted lenses.
Umbramatic Brown is particularly suitable for low prescriptions. For higher powers, not only Umbramatic 1.6 is recommended due to its high index, but also Umbramatic Equitint which guarantees uniform darkening of the lens regardless of its thickness.

Umbramatic Brown

With an attractive basic brown tint of approx. 15%, Umbramatic Brown lenses display a pleasant filter effect. On exposure, the lens darkens to a light reduction level of 75%, with over 60% being reached after only 30 seconds. The lens also clears very quickly again. The brown tint ensures natural colour rendition at all stages of light reduction.

Umbramatic 1.6

The glass photochromic lenses Umbramatic 1.6 Brown and Umbramatic 1.6 Grey combine the benefits of a photochromic lens and a medium refractive index.
With the cosmetically attractive brown or grey tint and the wide darkening range of 15% to 75%, they provide a comfortable filter effect or optimum protection against glare, depending on the light conditions present.
While previous medium index photochromic materials took approx. 5 minutes to reach a light reduction level of 65%, today’s Umbramatic 1.6 lenses do so after as few as 90 seconds.

Our Recommendations

  • The smaller the frame selected, the lower the edge thickness of minus lenses and the fewer differences in transmission
  • For higher prescriptions: Umbramatic Equitint lenses with a uniform tint, regardless of lens thickness

Umbramatic Equitint

ZEISS Umbramatic Equitint lenses are particularly suitable for higher ametropia and higher astigmatic powers. A thin photochromic shell cemented onto the high index base lens results in uniform darkening, regardless of the dioptric power. Even with major power differences between the right and left eyes, there is no difference in the intensity of the tint.
With a wide darkening range between 10% and 70%, Umbramatic Equitint lenses provide optimum protection against glare in practically any situation.

Our Recommendations

  • Recommended for power differences between right and left, as uniform darkening is guaranteed
  • In bifocal lenses an equitint shell is the only way of achieving uniform darkening. There is then no difference in transmission between the near and distance portions
  • Suitable for driving in twilight and at night in all dioptric powers
  • Reliable protection against solar UV radiation
  • Natural colour rendition
